Is the overlay visible during screen sharing: what's seen and what isn't
Only you see the hints - the question is just which screen they land on. During browser screen sharing the Vizir overlay isn't captured. Where the system can show it (native clients on macOS 15, local recording), hints move to a phone companion. And against webcam proctoring the overlay does not help — we say that plainly.
Three different cases
Whether you share a tab, a window or the whole screen, and in which client, determines if the overlay is visible.
| How you share | Overlay | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Browser sharing (Google Meet, web Zoom, web Teams) | hidden | Sharing a tab or window from the browser — on any macOS and Windows. The interviewer only sees your share. |
| Web coding platforms (CoderPad, CodeSignal, Codility) | hidden | They run through the browser — the overlay isn't captured. |
| Native Zoom/Teams/Webex on macOS 14 and below | hidden | Desktop clients on Sonoma/Ventura exclude the overlay window from capture. |
| Native clients on macOS 15+ | may be visible | The new capture path (ScreenCaptureKit) can show the overlay. Use the phone companion. |
| Local screen recording on macOS (QuickTime, OBS) | may be visible | Direct screen recording can capture the overlay. The companion removes this risk. |
| Windows 10/11, sharing and most recorders | hidden | The window is excluded from capture at the system level. Not guaranteed on every capture method or remote desktop. |
| Proctoring (HackerRank Proctoring, Proctorio, Mettl) | won't help | Scans processes, window focus and the webcam. A hidden overlay does not save you — don't risk it. |
Proctoring and the webcam — use the phone companion
If the interview runs under proctoring that watches your screen and camera, no hidden overlay is safe: the system sees running processes and tracks your gaze. For cases where the whole screen is shared directly or local recording is on, there's the phone companion: hints go to a device you don't share. But it doesn't defeat webcam proctoring — in those formats it's more honest not to risk it.
